In the constantly changing field of human resources, it is imperative that employers be aware of changes that affect their organizations and the process of managing employees. Nowhere is this truer than in the in the areas of government compliance and employee rights. As employees demand more job and employment rights regarding drug testing, monitoring, unjust dismissals, off-duty conduct, and a vast number of other issues, employers must be knowledgeable about new laws, court rulings, and the policies of other organizations that influence each area. This knowledge enables managers to respond to employee concerns in a positive and proactive manner. Failure to provide employees their rights could lead to costly and embarrassing lawsuits, resulting in diminished employee loyalty or morale.

Here are just a few areas to consider when addressing legal compliance and your organization:

Wage and hour compliance

Equal Pay Act

Civil Rights Acts

Age Discrimination

Pregnancy Discrimination

Americans with Disabilities Act

Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act

Sexual Harassment

COBRA compliance

An HR Assessment can help you determine if there are compliance issues that need to be addressed.

Designing effective documents is critical to communicating an organization’s policies and procedures. Do you have these documents in place?

Employee Handbook

An employee handbook can be a valuable communication resource for the employer and the employee. It provides guidance and information related to the company’s history, mission, values, policies, procedures and benefits in a written format. It is also viewed as a means of protecting the company against discrimination or unfair treatment claims. It is an easily accessible guide to the company’s policies and practices as well as an overview of the expectations of management. In contrast, a policy is a written statement that reflects the employer’s standards and objectives relating to various employee activities and employment-related matters.

Job Descriptions

Creating effective job descriptions enables an organization to communicate the desired performance expected from the employee. It also communicates the boundaries of the job as they relate to other employees. Well-written job descriptions inform an employee how their job fits strategically into the organization and is important in measuring job performance.

Performance Evaluations

There are many performance evaluation options. The choice of the documents used should be based largely on the purpose of the appraisal. Careful consideration should be taken to ensure the best suited evaluation forms are designed to appropriately communicate and measure the desired behavior.

Policy & Procedure Manuals

Employee handbooks addresses specific information related to the employees. Policy and procedure manuals provide “how to” guidance to employees and management. These manuals go into much great detail about the topics they cover. There are benefits to having both an Employee Handbook and a Policy Manual as well. Companies can cover important general topics, such as sexual harassment, in Employee Handbooks, but address other operational instructions in the Policy & Procedures Manuel.

Research has shown that an organization’s revenues and overall profitability are positively correlated t the amount of training it gives its employees. However, management is often too busy with handling the day-to-day operations to address soft-skill training needs. On-Call Human Resource Services can partner with you to provide the training your employees need.

Here are some areas to consider enhancing the personal development of your staff:

Mentoring/ Coaching

Engaging a mentor/coach who can partner with the business and employees to provide support with performance and career issues.

Customer Service

It is imperative that a business emphasizes customer service from the moment a new employee joins the team. Does your employees understand the importance of providing exceptional customer service?

Administrative Training

One of the most neglected areas of training in most businesses involves the administrative staff.

Does your organization have a system to address the training needs of the administrative staff?

Often the administrative staff are the first people a customer, or prospective customer, comes in contact. Does your administrative staff understand the magnitude of their role in representing the organization?

Does your Administrative Assistant, Executive Assistant or Office Manager possess the desirable strategic skills to anticipate your needs and manage time and projects?

Professional Image

Image has an undeniable impact on your organization’s reputation, and your employees represent your business in the marketplace. The appropriateness of their appearance – even on casual workdays – is crucial. How your employees groom and dress creates an instant and lasting impression on every customer and potential customer they meet. Could your employees use assistance in creating the professional image that would enhance their credibility?

Personality Assessments

Personality assessment have become increasingly popular over the last few years. When used appropriately, they can help organizations make the right hiring decisions. They also can be used to address performance issues and improve the productivity of current employees.

The importance of employee satisfaction is critical to employee morale. Employees who are only partially satisfied are less productive and often do not remain with the organization very long. Employees who are happy and satisfied with their work environment are more productive, treat customers better and have a greater commitment to the organization. Have you conducted a recent job satisfaction survey in your organization?

Employee Events Planning

While management of organizations may understand the significance of holding annual employee events, often the day-to-day operations prevents them from taking the time to plan well thought out employee functions. Do you have any of these significant events to plan?

Annual party or picnic

Employee recognition event

Annual retreat

Year-end celebration

Streamlining processes and systems creates efficiency and enables business owners, managers and team members to focus on providing superior customer service. Just a few of the benefits resulting from putting in place HR systems and processes include:

The needs of employees are met timely

The learning process for new staff is considerably reduced

Overall efficiency is increased

Less manpower is needed to administer to operations

Employee information is readily accessible

Employee retention increases

Increases communication between employees

So where do you begin? Here are just a few areas where implementing processes and systems are instrumental:

Personnel Files

One person should be assigned the responsibility for setting up and maintaining the personnel files of all permanent and temporary employees. A personnel file consists of “ongoing” personal information relating to the individual’s application, hiring, promotion, transfer, salary and separation.

New Employee Orientation

New employee orientation effectively integrates an employee into the organization and assists with retention, motivation, job satisfaction, and quickly enabling each individual to become contributing members of the work team.

Performance Management

Performance management is the systematic process by which an organization involves its employees in achieving its goals. The employee performance process includes:

Planning work and setting expectations,

Continually monitoring performance,

Developing the capacity to perform,

Periodically rating performance, and

Rewarding good performance

Benefits Administration

Employee benefits are one of the greatest challenges in business today in attracting and retaining quality employees. Implementing an effective system to administer the benefits offered is critical to employee satisfaction and to the compliance of federal and state requirements.

A ministry of On Call Human Resources.

Those who look to him for help will be radiant with joy; no shadow of shame will darken their faces. (Psalm 34:5)

Radiant living is God’s desire for everyone, and it includes every aspect of your life. It begins with addressing foundational issues that keep you stuck in destructive life patterns.

The integrated approach of “Restoring the Foundations” provides freedom in four specific areas: Generational Sins, Ungodly Beliefs, Life’s Hurts and Demonic Oppression.

The healing and wholeness that God brings from restoring the foundational issues removes the shame-based mindset that is rooted in your belief system. Once illumination of your true identity immerges, you can move forward in living the life God intended. Radiant living involves finding your true purpose and discovering your unique gifts and strengths.

Radiant living is “intentional living” and requires redesigning your life by making wise choices that impact your foundation – body, mind and spirit. It involves developing new habits of thinking and behaving in major areas of life.

Life Purpose – What is God calling you to do in this season of your life?

Spiritual Growth – Is your relationship with God growing deeper?

Courageous Change – Are you ready to let go of the “old” and step into the fullness of God’s plans for you?

Career – Are you utilizing your natural gifts and strengths?

Relationships – Are you building and maintaining strong relationships?

Health & Nutrition – Are you properly caring for your body?

Physical – Are you engaged in physical exercise and maintaining a healthy weight for your body type?

Personal Development – Are you consistently learning and growing?

Budgeting Time and Money – Do you budget your time, income and expenditures and live within your means?

Fun and creativity – Do you have an avenue for relaxation and a means to release your creativity?
